A Charles
II Oak Gateleg Table
with a drawer and central turned stretchers to the base. Wonderful
patina and of small to medium proportions.
English gateleg tables are nearly always oval in shape (Dutch versions
are more usually square or rectangular) and were made in all sizes
- from small tables with flaps supported by single 'gates' to very
large examples needing two gates to support each flap. Although early
gateleg tables date from the middle of the 17th century, most gatelegs
found today are from the 17th and 18th C. The changing style of the
leg constitutes the best guide to dating.
